Students Must Fill Out FAFSA To Qualify For Financial Aid

Sallie Mae - a provider of student loans - reports that more than $168 billion in tuition assistance was available during the 2008-2009 academic year. However, degree seekers must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for scholarships, grants, student loans and federal work-study programs.

March 10, 2011 is the deadline for the FAFSA, which provides the government with information regarding a student's financial need. According to the Star Press, the information on the form lets financial aid organizations know if a learner is qualified for federal aid programs, such as Pell Grants and Stafford Loans; state aid, such as 21st Century Scholars or the Frank O'Bannon Grant; or programs provided by the school of choice.

"It is very important that students submit their forms by that date," said Kathy Niese, regional director for 21st Century Scholars, quoted by the news source. The FAFSA includes about 100 questions regarding each family's ability to pay for college tuition.

According to the National Center for Education, 66% of all undergraduates received some type of financial aid during the 2007-2008 academic year. The average amount was $9,100 per student.
